Backlight concerns - driving circuitry?

Post by blakespot »

I am trying to build a little sys stats LCD unit for my computer and am going to use the IO-Warrior controller.

Here is an example project just as I will be carrying out.

I am told that certain types of backlighting can complicate matters as they require a regulated higher initial voltage, then a low feed after lit, like a flourescent lamp. I am also told that LED backlighting avoids this and keep the arrangement simple (and similar to the abovelinked project).

Is it true that I will need no extra hardware dealing with the backlight on, say, this unit:

...since it uses an LED backlight. (It is HD44780 compatible.)

Thanks.

You need at least a circuit that switches the backlight on and off.

Have a look at the IO-Warrior datasheet, it shows how to connect an LCD module. The IOW24KIT already has the necessary hardware on the board.

I am told somewhere on this site is a circuit diagram for attaching an LCD that has a backlight (variable resistor for backlight level, etc.). Can someone point me to that? Thanks.

Do you have the IO-Warrior data sheet? Page 25.
