Light measurement (Lux)

Post by Guido Körber »

Combining IOW24-DG with a BH1750FVI light sensor module gives you a low cost measurement device for illuminance. (*)

The sensor module is available via our sales partner Segor.

Building it is quite simple. Solder the pin header to the sensor module. Solder the cable to the IOW24-DG module, then plug the two together. Download the software and start measuring lux.

(*) Lux (lx) is the unit for illuminance. It is one of three units typically used to describe the intensity of light.
Unfortunately the units are often mixed up. Like when someone asks how many lux a luminaire produces. The total amount of light emitted by a luminaire (also called luminous flux) is measured in lumen (lm).
Candela (cd) specifies the intensity of light, it is defined by the number of lumen per solid angle. A high candela number is often an indication for a focused light source and possibly a glare effect.
Lux are lumen per square meter. The greater the distance to a light source the lower the lux number, the same is true for a wider emitting angle of the light source. Measuring lux is necessary to check if there is sufficient light at a work place.
The combination of IOW24-DG and BH1750 gives you a low cost test unit to check if your lighting performing properly.
